Greenville History

The town dates back to Revolutionary War times, founded in 1771 as Martinsborough, changing its name to Greenesville in 1786 after Revolutionary War Gen. Nathanael Greene, then later became present-day Greenville. Riverboat traffic along the Tar River brought goods and commerce to the growing hub in the mid to late 1800s, with a focus on tobacco and cotton. The city kept changing with the times, attracting new industry, and by 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau lists 84,554 as the city’s population.
