Belhaven Real Estate - Belhaven Homes for Sale
Belhaven Real EstateWhen a county boasts of having 88,000 acres of water, it’s a safe bet that you’ll find lots of waterfront real estate within its borders. The county is Beaufort, North Carolina and its crown jewel is Belhaven, a town with a population of just over 2,000. Because Belhaven is located on the Pungo River, if you’re looking for waterfront living, this may be the ideal place for you. Belhaven began life as a lumber town, situated on the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. Today, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting are its main industries.
Recreation
The Pungo River’s salinity rises and falls frequently. It becomes saltier during high tide and less salty when it rains. Because of this, the river is host to a diverse array of sea life. Residents have even reported spotting a dolphin in the river. Crab traps frequently bring up sea-going fish. The river is the site of a large part of the town’s recreational activities. Sailing, swimming and water skiing are favorite pastimes. Local campers love Goose Creek State Park, 30 minutes west of town, and Lake Mattamuskeet in Hyde County, about an hour east. Surrounded by a 50,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest of North Carolina’s natural lakes. Fishing is, of course, the favorite sport, but it’s followed closely by wildlife watching. Migratory birds are especially abundant during certain parts of the year.
Schools
Belhaven’s children are served by three public schools and three private schools. Beaufort County Community College is located within 30 minutes of Belhaven, while East Carolina University and Pitt Community College lie one hour west.
Belhaven Real Estate
BelhavenBecause of its strategic location on the river, opportunities to purchase waterfront Belhaven real estate are abundant. Belhaven offers residents a quiet, small-town atmosphere and the beauty of nature. Life is slow-paced and relaxed and people are friendly.
